Finding flow state
It's funny how words have changed over the years, how expressions become widespread and diluted. I recently saw a something a child had written about flow state and it made me wonder if they had any idea of what that meant or if it was just borrowed words.
For me finding a state of flow is when you are doing something so completely you loose track of time & you're absorbed in the moment, you're not worrying or overthinking just creating. I mean, it's the place to be, it's why I love all things creative, it's where my heart relaxes and I can be the dreamer that I innately am. No pressure to conform to societies standards of success, just be in the moment creating.
I wish I could just do that all day......whether it's dreaming up shoots on these steps of Ibiza, that looked like something from a Greek Mythology or guiding people to how I want to shoot them, or working with other creatives and joining our energy. That's where magic happens, where art is created.
This shoot was with a new friend Daniela, a Brazilian goddess who had as strong a vision as I did on what we wanted to create. It was a last minute shoot as I was running out of time in Ibiza and she was running late trying to prep with roses and we were both running out of light. So it wasn't the ideal shoot for me. I like to have time to discuss what my vision is and align it with the clients so we can co-create, so I'm sure to not miss anything they'd like. But, as is the way with Ibiza, things don't always go to plan, sometimes speed & not being prepared can be your friend if you embrace them both, let go and trust in the flow. Like life.
So I shot like crazy for the last 20 minutes of light, running up and down the steps, shooting past when the light has gone. Darker than I would usually go. Luckily my R6 loves low light. So it was a bit of an experiment & some of the images that came back were better than I'd expected. I've always loved the perfection of imperfection in photography, to me that's where the beauty is, blurred movement, adding grain to a photo to give it the look of film I always shot on as a teenager. We got so many images like that. We shared a Brazilian cacao ceremony and danced under the moon and got my camera back out & realised I'd put it away too soon.
The things I learnt from this shoot were to just let go sometimes, if you've got a creative client that's ok, work with them, be clear. I had to say a few times, please trust me babe, but together we both created something special. Trust your camera, be patient, always remember to breathe however excited you get. Be in the flow, don't stress. Most importantly, to trust myself. I know I can create beautiful images, especially when I'm working with women who are also creative, also in the healing arts. This is where my heart is. Being creative, making beautiful things, helping people shine their light into the world.
Always chasing your light, finding your light, literally chasing the light sometimes but always creating magic in your photos.
